You are one silly goose*

[*references this Supernatural gag reel.]

Mostly because we live like crazy people, Hermana Salmeron and I. probably because.... we are crazy people.

Today we uncovered a great Chilean secret recipe: HUMITAS. they’re basically tomales, but turns out they take like 7 hours to make, or in other words, one whole p-day. And for this delicious blessing you will now be referred to a short and sweet summary of what we did this week.

-We had a mulitzone [conference] with Presidente Teixeira, our area president. It was great and we were spiritually destroyed, during and afterwards. The thing he said that most impressed me was this: If you have to choose between being trusted or loved, choose first to be trusted. Love will follow. It may be because he said it in English. But it’s true. And I like it.

-One time we were contacting for 5 hours when a little girl popped up from behind a fence and said, "Hey, are you the Mormon missionaries?" and we said ".......yes." and she screamed, "GREAT BECAUSE I’M NINE YEARS OLD AND I WANT TO BE MORMON!!!!" and we said, "wat in de fweet is going on here??" And that’s how we met Victoria.

-We spent another day contacting and looking for a reference and we found her. It doesn’t sound very exciting but we were thrilled, people. Thrilled I tell you. Miracles are real.

- In my study I learned a lot of things mostly I just felt good reading the scriptures. Hermana Teixeira reminded us of the importance of the Book of Mormon, so I’m gonna pass her message along. Use the Book of Mormon Everyday. Pls. It’s so good.

-Deep doctrine. Hermana Salmeron and I are crazy and we sometimes get carried away. Whadya think, could the Liahona be an Urim and Thumim? What even happened to the Sword of Laban? Are the stories of a young Abraham destroying the wooden idols of his father true?

And lastly a challenge: Where are the missionaries in your ward (Family, did you know there are 4 Elders in our ward? I wonder what they are doing right......now...)

We’re praying for all of you, and love to hear what you’re doing.
Cuídense! Nos vemos!

Santa Maria, Santa Barbara SANTA CLAUS*

(*references Che Hora Es?)

This week:

-YOUR PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED Hermana Salmeron and I are gonna be together another transfer. #blessings

-We helped the Bomberos (Firemen) in a service project with a lot of heavy lifting and when we finished all the work in like 20 minutes they were like, "Uh...... gr8 job. I dunno why we didn’t do that earlier...." And we said, "Probably because we’re missionaries. Wanna be baptized?" and they said, "Oh my, do you hear that? I think there’s a fire or something. We gotta go. You too."
So we went to do another service project in a garden. It was great also. Then we had completos and soda.

-Just today for P-day we went to YUMBEL to "meet" San Sebastian. I was like, "I had no idea the body of San Sebastian was here???" Turns out I was confused for a reason because there’s really nothing but a chubby little statue and a wall of miracles. So many miracles. Turns out this saint just keeps giving. Fear not. We definitely asked for Baptisms. ;])) It was fun and I may or may not have purchased various keepsakes which may or may not include un rosario. #no-one-can-know-for-sure #oops #thank-goodness-for-repentance

It’s good to know that we can pray directly to our Loving Heavenly Father, and we don’t need to wait for some (naked) dead guy to do it for us. That’s why we have Agency and also prayer and also a body. So that with God, we can do all things.

-Turns out sometimes we work rull hard and then suddenly all our work pays off. Then other times it doesn’t and we just keep working. What I learned from this transfer is a lot of stuff. Mostly that it’s way better to be yourself as a missionary because we teach better when we love. I was reviewing a note from my teacher in the MTC which said, God needs your love more than he needs your language. I think it’s probably true.

How can YOU love someone today in the way that God would love them?
D&C 121
Alma 26:5
D&C 27:15

There are a lot of photos this week. I dunno, I guess you could use your little eyeballs and look at them and wonder about what they are... I know somewhere in there is a wall of all the miracles, my companion as a Bombero, San Sebastian, and one miracle in specific which included a bag of hair...???? Who know what happened there....

I would but I JUST CAN´T REACH

[Title references this Gravity Falls episode.]

Also because Everyone and their cousin sent me a sweet sweet letter, I have exactly 25 seconds to write to you.

- INES AND HUMBERTO ARE GONNA GET HITCHED. 12 of May. everyone is invited

-We met a little old man who we will call Juan. He wants to be baptized and so we set a date. Then he told us a story with a lot of words which i didn't understand (which clued me in to the fact that something was strange) then I realized that he was telling us about that one time when he was younger and a gangster and may have killed two or three people. :D don´t worry. Repentance is real. He's totally gonna be baptized. In just one minute or a little longer.

-We had one million people in the chapel and it was a miracle in the old fashioned sense. super great. Even Juan was there. Seriously. We're gonna baptize him.

This week we'll know our transfers. Pray that Hermana Salmeron and I are together one more time. She's amazing. And Crazy. She's the coolest person I know. And we're working our buns off.

Super quick question. This week we studied some stuff and I was wondering what is the difference between doctrine and principle?
Doctine = why
Principle = how???
maybe??

Okay..... gotta run!!!

Mi compañera She's the best.

God is in the details, and also in the bushes

We worked a lot with plants and fruit this week.

Miracles exist people. In case you were wondering.

We saw all sorts of miracles this week. Like the fact that we are working to complete the new mission goals and we had 7 new investigators this week. How we did that we may never know. But it’s a true story.

-We had a gr8 zone service project (AT LAST) in Cabrero. We thought we were going to help the firemen build their station, but they didn’t show up, so we went to a Garden where many of the local people with disabilities sell plants. It was a disaster so we cleaned it right up and made the Director cry because he was so happy to have help. Missionary work is cool like that. Sometimes the most help we can give isn’t in sharing a scripture, but serving and working with people who really need someone else to pay a little attention to their needs.

And now a things that happened that you’ll just have to wonder about:

-A drunk spilled his wine into my missionary bag. #sharing-is-caring

-We had a mateado with the Rama where we had Tortillas Al rescoldo and Mate #Mate-is-just-hot-soggy-grass

-We went to the mountains to collect Mora (Blackberries) with Inez (the future wife of Humberto) and it was great. We got to commune with nature and lots of thorns. Inez the best investigator we have is going to make us Mermelade. #hotjam

-Humberto has three asistencias [church attendance] and is now qualified for baptism......sort of #put-a-ring-on-it-pls

-I almost had to eat fish for lunch, but my companion is the best and was like, "Hermana? What is that distraction??" and ate it for me. #blessed
It’s not that I don’t like fish, I just never want to eat it. Ever.

Have you ever noticed how great the scriptures are?
I like all of them, but especially right now I like Moses, right after God appears to Moses in (as) the Burning Bush. Because we’re reading it as companions and it’s blowing our tiny minds. #it-might-be-deep-doctrine
God is in every particle of the earth; it’s like Science and Religion were created by the same person or something.....

And one last thing: Our best recent converts have amazing questions. About the Holy Ghost and we’re doing our best to answer them, but we want to know what you think. Did we know the Holy Ghost before this life? Will the Holy Ghost receive a body? if so... when? Won’t we always need the help of the Holy Ghost?
We went right to the scriptures; 1 Nephi 13:22 But what do you know?

could it be Love?

There’s Just....No TIME!!

Subject line because I live in the no time zone

This week I developed a Testimony of Prayer with my best Companion Hermana Salmeron.

Remember that one time when Hermana Salmeron prayed to receive revelation about how to make Empenadas de Queso....... and then she made the most delicious empenadas I’ve ever had? and I said.... Is this real life?? #Godisinthedetails #alsointhekitchen

Next we prayed for our investigator Eugenia to assist [attend] Church Sunday. And when we arrived at her house before church and she came to the door in her pearly white pijamas we were like.....oh no. And she said, "I dunno, Hermanas, maybe it’s better that I just don’t go........." and after a brief pause she said, "okay actually let’s go!! help me make breakfast!" and thus we hastily departed to eat and also walk to church. And I think she liked it a lot! Now she’s going to pray to see if she should be baptized march 10th.

All sorts of little prayers have been answered.

One more!
Today we were walking like five miles to our Zone activity, and Hermana Salmeron Prayed that someone (good) would pass by and give us a ride. AND THIS REALLY HAPPENED: A cute little lady passed and said, "Hermanas! I know exactly where you are going, it’s right next to my house, I saw the other missionaries there this morning! Let’s go!!" I almost died right there because she’s not even a member.......YET.
#shegonnabebaptized

OKAY I GOTTA GO!! I promise photos next time. HA HA. time. lol.

I’m also going to send the coolest baby names you’ve ever not heard. #MAPUCHE

See you all in one year.
-Hermanerm Baer

A huge thanks to everyone else who believes in Prayer and is praying for the missionaries and for our investigators. Pls to pray for these people:

A dog peed on Hermana Salmerón

It’s true. That really happened. She was thrilled.

And now for the week in bulletin:

-We’re having a party with the Rama. Everyone is invited this Friday. Literally all of Cabrero. Karaoke and pool party. NO alcoholic beverages, please.

-Isidora decided to go to church in Yumbel.... but not the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints aka the Only True Church Where We Can Find Lasting Happiness, but the OTHER church, if you know what I mean. So feel free to pray for her.

-We contacted the entire police department in Monte Aguila. They’re really friendly. Also, Fun Fact: the police live with their families at the police station. Who knew?

-We sang at the super Catholic funeral of a little boy. It was...........weird. Also turns out we don’t sing very good.

-Following an unusual but powerful spiritual prompting, we promised our unmarried investigator couple of ages 60 and 42 that if they got married and were working to be sealed in the temple, they could finally have kids. The Hermano nearly died right there in our lesson.

-We’re teaching English. Or at least attempting to do so.

-In our Zone Conference Presidente May revealed the new weekly mission goals. Each week we will now work to have 1 baptism, 15 new investigators, 15 investigators with a baptismal date, and 12 investigators attending church. #vamos_que_se_puede
Ya know, I once read in 1 Nephi 3:7 that "the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them." We will now be excersicing 297% more faith because I dunno how we’re gonna do that, but if Presidente May said we can, we’re gonna do it.

- I know that this is God’s work. The Book of Mormon is True.

I don’t know why we don’t have more photos:
One and only: The president of the Rama didn’t understand the names of Hermana Salmerón or Hermana Gourley and wrote this to introduce them to the Ward.

AM I TALKING LOUDER THAN NORMAL?*

*[references this Spiderman clip]

If so, it’s because we’re excited, because at last Isidora took the dip at 7:00, February 3, 2018 . She’s now a member of the True Church. It was all very precious and spiritual. And crazy pants. Like the kind of crazy where we saw opposition in ALL THINGS and also miracles in all things.

Here’s what happened:
The whole week: we were in search of a tunic for Isidora because.... turns out Cabrero doesn’t have one.

Friday Night: So there we were. Contacting. Knockin' doors. Like always. When suddenly we see one of our investigators frantically throwing all of their possessions out of their house into a truck. Hna Salmeron and I are like, "What in the fweet is going on??" Turns out, she’s moving. RIGHT NOW. to Monte Aguila! So we call some members to help her move the last few things Saturday morning. And we receive a call that we don’t actually have lunch for Saturday anymore. :) yay. No problem. It’s at this moment that the Assistants call us and say, we’re going to be in your house tomorrow to see if it’s clean. Not a problem; our house is just a slight disaster because of cambios and also 10,000 things to do for a baptism.

Saturday: THE INSANITY BEGINS! (also literally because I have an Insanity workout disc which we use every single day. #I<3pain. I know, right? Who even am I?? ) We got up bright and extra early to clean our house and still be normal missionaries.
We still don’t have clothes for Isidora or food for us. But now we’re helping the investigator move and clean. Suddenly another lady/investigator across the street sees us in pants and says something I didn’t understand and probably shouldn’t repeat but also says, "HERMANAS! Mi papa va a tener un asado hoy!! VENGAN!!" Or translation, the angels sent us lunch. And it was delicious. A little weird. But good.
THEN we’re working, but also we have to be in the church to clean and fill the font for 5 hours. yay. Good news is our district leader came in in the clutch and brought a tunic for Isi. More good news the font is full by 6:00. The bad news is the filter is broken so we got all kinds of floaty/swimmy/questionable friends in the water. WHICH IS ALSO FOR SOME REASON GREEN????  Ya, no worries. I’m sure it’s fine. Good news: our mission leader called everyone and so we have a program. Bad news: it’s only a piece of wrinkly paper with names, and so we don’t have anything to pass to those in attendance. Good news: The elders got us covered, and I’ve attached the amazing program. (side note this was created in POWERPOINT in like 5 minutes. Go Elders.) Now it’s 6:30, and Isidora shows up with all of the other people, and we’re running around making sure all of the food we bought is ready and everything is perfect. At 6:55 someone’s like, “HERMANAS, Isidora doesn’t have a towel!!” NOT A PROBLEM. We just run to our house and then also run back to the church just as everything begins. And as soon as we started, everything went great. Except for the part where we forgot that it was fast Sunday, so all the members were just eating cake and cookies. But not us. :)))))

So good. So many words. So many things happened this week. I think it’s because I have a new companion. I dunno, I think both of us have that 'weird stuff happens' curse. So now it’s like 2x the weirdness. But we’re good. Hna Salmeron is fabulous. Also everything about her is huge and crazy. But in the best way possible.

There’s just no time to say more but feel free to put this in your prayers, because we have a testimony of prayers.
-Jose and Catalina Constanzo Silva - that they can resolve a small civil matter and get married so as to be baptized ASAP
-Inez and Humberto - also to get hitched
-Us - that we can find the people

I’m at my word limit for this letter. I dunwan tak mor.

Shhsshh ...do you hear that?...

It’s the winds of change....

Well. Kind of. I’m not going anywhere. Except out of my mind. Because our little trio is now a cuatro! Hna Lopez (Honduras) is headed south to Victoria. Hermana França and I will stay here in Cabrero, but with different companions. She and Hermana Goeling (?from AMERICA!!!!!?) will be working in Monte Aguila. Which is actually just the Malad of Chile. It’s going to be great. Hermana SALMERON (Mexico) will be my new companion! woot. We’ll be working mostly here in Cabrero Central. yay.

Thank you for your prayers for Marian. I’m afraid she is dead. In an investigator sense. We went to visit her and found her - answer to your prayers thx - and she said she could no longer accept our visits because she is going to get back with her abusive and homicidal Ex and he doesn’t like it when she has visitors or leaves the house. :)   And we said "cry, cry" but also we’re not giving up on her. You can still pray that she will be safe. And maybe in the future accept the gospel. We planted the seeds as best we could.

In other news Isidora WILL be baptized. What a twist. Her father, after a little bit of yelling and telling us how he was way too busy for the missionaries, for the gospel, or for religion, finally let us come into his house and talk to Isidora. And then he was like, "I don’t want any of that stuff, but I want Isidora to have it. Can she be baptized on the 3rd of February?" and we said...... "yeah, I guess."
So pray that when Saturday comes no one will be fatally injured or something normal and crazy that happens before a baptism.

Spiritual Thought: If doubt and fear are in opposition to faith, does Satan doubt he’s going to lose? Or does he know and he’s just gonna take as many with him as he can? How can we avoid doubt and fear? Have the faith we’re gonna win so, we can act without fear.
#winningteam

Okay. That’s all the time we’ve got for today.

Space Flowers

eeeehhhh...... I dunno.
We worked our little south american buns off this week.
It was hot. like.... REALLY HOT. see photos.
Oh yeah!! I bought a camera. Now you can look at the some of the things I look at.

We worked our little south american buns off this week.
The good news is that Isidora is a wonderful little girl. The bad news is that she will probably not be baptized. :) Hurray for all things in the Lord's time. Mostly it's just because she stopped attending church and we can't actually find her... not because she hasn't received all the lessons or doesn't want to be baptized. Maybe send your sweet American prayers for her and especially her father.

Maybe I never said anything but we had a Golden investigator, Marian, who stopped smoking and began to whip her life into shape, then fell off the face of the earth for a hot sec, then we found her again, then she was even more interested in the gospel, and then (miracle of miracles) came to church, and then in a sudden turn of events cancelled all our future appointments and won't let us visit her in her home......Soooooo also pray for her. And for us to know what in the fweet happened.

And then we found Maria and Henry. They're a perfect family who really need the gospel. They don't know it yet but we´re going to baptize them. All we need to do is prepare them. or just find them. ...

I guess the phrase that sums our week up pretty well is "where did everybody go??" And the answer is to YUMBEL. it´s like 30 minutes south of Cabrero and also is the Resting Place of Saint Sebastian. So......all of Chile was there. And not in their homes where we could teach them how to be happy for all eternity.

Also the Pope came to Chile. what a cool dude.

But not as cool as our new Prophet. That guy's gonna lead us down the path that rocks.

Ahem. Forgive me.
One thing I studied this week is DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS. Because I finished that whole Book of Mormon thing. Thank goodness that's over. Just kidding. I cried. I hart the BOM. Also, I listened to the talk by Presidente Monson "See Others as they May Become." It's real good. And I learned that when we see others as their potential, who they can become in the church, we are really seeing them as God sees them. That's how He views all of us... Which made me wonder.... How does God see me right now and in the future??

I cough cough love you all.
see you in a hot (or cold depending on where you're from) 13 months.
-Hermanerm Baer

Well, I must be going now

*references Winnie the Pooh
To be said rather in a rather sticky voice.
Because of that one time when we were visiting with a contact named Carlos. He keeps bees. lots and lots of bees. And he's a little old/crazy/a precious soul in the eyes of God. And he told a long and very confusing story about how one time he was out communing with nature and was about to (I'm so sorry, Mom) take a pee, but God told him instead to be a Beekeeper. So he (sorrysorrysorry) put his pants on and got to work. So there we were. Talking or rather listening to him, and he looks at me and says, "ya know, you remind me a lot of my mother." and I said, "😬" And then he offered us some of their honey on some delicious bread and it's pretty good. But while we were eating a little he said, "No really, you're just like my mom." and then attacked me the most uncomfy hug I've ever not been able to escape. And I said, "mmrrrf!!! eeeep Noooooooo!" And then we all said, rather stickily and in a hurry, "oh my look at the time!" and ran away. But not before we bought some very yummy honey. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But this week we taught some more Isidora, who is NOT going to be baptized this week after all... bummer But she will be baptized on the 27th. So.... next time for sure.

Also, we went to visit the bedridden sister of a recent convert, and here we encountered their brother who is 54 and also "disillusioned with all religion. Everywhere." And so it began. Hna Lopez (from Honduras) is pretty fiery as it is, and she likes to push people a little, and so they were going at it, ya know, like
Incredulous Brother: "Does God save people in their sins?"
Hna Lopez: "No, as we learn from the scriptures God saves people who really repent."
Incredulous Brother: "But if I have faith that really truly God exists, and I worship him in my home, I don't really need a religion." (note irrational subject change)
Hna Lopez: "So why did Jesus Christ establish a church if it weren't important?"
Incredulous Brother: "Which Church did he establish? Nobody can know. there are just too many, and all of them profess to be true."
Us in a maybe loud voice: "HAVE YOU ASKED GOD??"
IB: I'm not ready. also, no one can really know the truth. There are just too many options. Also you can't be sure your religion is true because you don't have enough experience, you're only 20 years old, and in all my life I've not found a true religion.
Hna Lopez: Well look at that, It seems that I've done in 20 years what you couldn't do in 50, I've found the truth.
Hna França and I: THAVAGE!!!
And then we invited him to act and he said: >:[ No thank you. I'm not ready for any commitment.

BUT!! We do have one investigator who is a really, really prepared soul.
Feel free to put Marian in your prayers - She's trying to stop smoking. She's the best.

Well I must be going now!!!

I would, but there's just no time*

*references Captain America HISHE

heh. this letter will be brief, but not like underwear, more like shorts. because it's really hot. so sooooo hot. like one hundred degrees. all the days in the street this week i was like.... dang, sun.

pls to forgive the terrible nature of this letter. it's really trying its very best. there is no   in this keyboard. i'd show you but I can't because it doesn't exist. but the words uiet uack, like a duck, and earthuak use this letter. it's like a game. woohoo. so much fun. you can't tell how excited i am because the exlamation point also doesn't function. hurray for this amazing opportunity to look for alternative ways to get people to understand what i'm saying......
hurray for that's actually what i do everyday all day long.

but really. we've been teaching some people. here is the low down and so speed on them

-patricio- a youngish son of a member who, sadly, we won't be teaching him again because one time in our lesson i was like, bruh, what are you gonna do when you know our message is true -uestion mark- and he said, i dunno. probably nothing. i was just hoping to hear your point of view about your religion.

-teresa- a nueva that we found this week. she lives in a teeny house with four kids and said she'd love to come to church with us, but when we called sunday morning she said she was actually in a different church at that moment, so she probably wouldn't be able to assist with us. but we like her and want her salvation, so we'll keep teaching her about the best church we know.

-isidora- she's 9. and she really wants to be baptized. her father is less active and also..... less interested. she's super great and also very shy. but she's gonna be baptized january 20th

we find a lot of people who express interest in the gospel... just not right now. i've been thinking, how often does this happen to us, that we are invited to participate in the reality of the joy of the gospel, acting and serving others, and we say.... tomorrow is when i will be ready. i'd like to invite yall to do something tuday that will help someone else to find the gospel, or maybe just be nice to the missionaries in your ward. ya know, would you like a hot or cold drink or can i visit someone with you guys-i-mean-elders.

how can you serve the saviour through serving others

i'd write or tell you all more but there is just no time. and no other way. tune in next week to find out what the mystery letter was and also probably an even more vague and rapid letter.

----bye bye.

Joe, you make me tired all over when you talk like that

Hope y’all had a gr8 Holiday season.
A Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year.

In Cabrero, we worked until 7 New year’s eve, then had a nice little dinner with the Recent Converts, then went straight to bed. We’re pooped, people.

New years was P-DAY and I made a delightful Alfredo. AT LAST. Good news is, there are left overs. Anyone who wants some is welcome to join me.

I finished Jesus the Christ. And there was much rejoicing. It’s good. I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up.

The work continues through the holidays. One of the things that I love about contacting is that we get to hear all sorts of things from people of all sorts of lifestyles. And I do mean ALL sorts. What I love most of all is knowing that the gospel really brings a different light and knowledge to our lives.

One time, we were talking with some menos active members in their home, when their neighbor pipes up and says, "The Mormon church is really very beautiful. I like it a lot. There’s just one problem. You guys don’t get baptized in a River. Jesus Christ was baptized in a river. It´s really the only way one should get baptized. Show me in the Bible where it says you can be baptized in the pool in your church." When the people say, "Show me in the Bible" I just make a pleasant face and think to myself, "Joe, ya make me tired all over when ya talk like that." :]

Hurray for the misinterpretations of men.

But I love that we don’t need to rely on other people, or solely on the Bible or Book of Mormon. We can go directly to the Source. We can pray and really discover the truth for ourselves. We don’t need to depend completely on interpretations, God can help us know for sure.

I dunno. Give it a try.

-Hermana Baer

Photo... good news is, it's a new year and I need to buy a new camera. The old one straight up died. It´s the Completo that we bought because we completed three-ish months in Chile!!! Hurray!

Surprise. They gave us another day to write to you. Merry Christmas to me! And now to you. Enjoy as many photos as I can cram into one digital letter.

haha. It's two photos. #Godblesschileantechnology #prayfortheinternet

I wanted to upload a video of our apartment before and after in Curanilahue, but it will take more than 6 hours. So you will have to wait a little bit longer than that, and I’ll show them to you all in February of 2019.
Patience is a virtue, people.

But in all truth, I hope you had the merriest Christmas and enjoyed some time to ponder and reflect on the birth of our Savior, the Light of the World. The lights were always my favorite part of Christmas. But in the mission, I have the opportunity of giving to complete strangers the best gift I could give - the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
